X : Complexity
CLAMP's X is a truely amazing series. It is huge ... huge in scope, huge in vision, ... a real giant of the shojo genere.
Beautiful, yet violent and angst-wridden. Head-spinningly complex, yet based upon fundamentally simple concepts. Betrayal, Love, the End of the World and not least of all, the classis struggle of Good vs. Evil.
Presenting a plethera of characters, masterfully developed, exhibiting a wide range of natures, from sadistic to silly, innocent to perverse.
In the classic style of shojo, the main focus of this anime is on the interrelationships between the characters, but this does not transform it into a series shamelessly aimed towards the fangirl. Because of it's wide scope and depth X, though clearly a shojo series, can transcend the traditional barriers seperating "girl's anime" from "boy's anime". Despite time spent in the development of, (and ultimately torture of) the characters, X remains a series greatly devoted to action. The plot never tends towards the dull, and CLAMP always seems to have another trick up their sleaves to surprise their fans with, even after they've become jaded, and belive they have seen all anime has to offer.
X is certainly CLAMP's greatest creation to date.
